Each session is unique just as each family is unique. Plus, if you add kids it can make things unpredictable! If your group includes kids, they will take their cues from you so try to relax and make it fun. I have lots of experience with kids, have 3 young children of my own, and am a member of the National Association of Professional Child Photographers. And I want you to enjoy the process of getting new photos for your walls, so relax and enjoy your session! I've got you covered!
The short answer is NOTHING!
For family sessions, you don't have to bring anything but yourselves. Yet if your child has a special toy or stuffed animal it can be nice for comfort. Feel free to bring snacks and drinks if kids need to take breaks as taking pictures can be tiring, especially for little ones. A typical session lasts about an hour and while I aim for "perfect", sometimes it's just more fun to let the kids take the lead. Plus you get some great candid shots that way!
For newborns, you also don't have to bring anything! I have all the props, blankets, etc. and I have an entire prep sheet for those booking sessions that answers every question I could think of. I send out this helpful guide before baby arrives so you have more time to read it.
Even after saying that, if you have a particular vision for your session, you are welcome to bring your own props. For baby sessions, I've had several clients bring items from their nursery or props for a certain theme. One time we did trucks and toys! I'd love to visit with you if you have a particular vision in mind!
For families, pick a color scheme for your group that includes 3-5 colors. That way you coordinate yet also have variety. One tip is if you are wanting a certain shot for a canvas print, look at the colors in your home. Don't be afraid of colors and patterns and remember layers can take your photo to a whole new level. If you can't decide or have questions, don't hesitate to contact me!
For seniors I recommend only 2-3 outfits max as we want to spend more time taking photos than doing wardrobe changes. And we can visit beforehand about clothing choices and options, especially layering as that can be a quick way to get different looks for your photos.
Pets are welcome if you want to include them in some family pictures. Just have a plan for your pet to return to the car or have someone available to hold them when not in the photos. I can help during certain shots but mostly need my hands free.
Please let me know if you have a special pose or shot you want. I want you to love your photos and when you communicate your desires I can better tailor your session. I've coordinated with many clients over Pinterest boards where we can pin and share ideas. And it helps give me a sense of your vision if you want a particular color-scheme or style. While I cannot guarantee any particular shot, I always strive to incorporate client ideas and love to try new things!
Remember, we want your photos to preserve the memories of your family as you ARE- which can mean silliness, pouting, crazy smiles or giggles. Let loose and have fun with your session. Who would want it any other way?!
